How Many NWSL Teams Make the Playoffs? Here's How the Format Works

If you've started following the National Women's Soccer League and suddenly realized the regular season table is becoming considerably more stressful, there's probably a reason.

The playoffs are approaching.

And one of the first questions new fans tend to have is simple:

How many NWSL teams make the playoffs?

For the 2026 NWSL season, eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

With 16 clubs competing in the league, that means exactly half of the NWSL reaches the postseason.

But simply getting into the top eight isn't the entire story.

Where a team finishes matters.

A lot.

Here's how the NWSL playoff format works.

How Many NWSL Teams Make the Playoffs in 2026?

Eight of the NWSL's 16 teams qualify for the 2026 playoffs.

The league operates as one table rather than dividing its clubs into conferences.

At the end of the regular season, the teams finishing:

1st through 8th qualify.

Teams finishing:

9th through 16th are eliminated.

There aren't separate Eastern and Western Conference playoff races.

It's one table.

Eight places.

That's it.

How Many Teams Are in the NWSL?

The NWSL has 16 teams in 2026.

The league expanded from 14 to 16 with the arrival of Boston Legacy FC and Denver Summit FC.

The 16 clubs competing in 2026 are:

  • Angel City FC

  • Bay FC

  • Boston Legacy FC

  • Chicago Stars FC

  • Denver Summit FC

  • Gotham FC

  • Houston Dash

  • Kansas City Current

  • North Carolina Courage

  • Orlando Pride

  • Portland Thorns FC

  • Racing Louisville FC

  • San Diego Wave FC

  • Seattle Reign FC

  • Utah Royals FC

  • Washington Spirit

Each club plays 30 regular-season matches, consisting of 15 home games and 15 away games.

With eight playoff places available, a team essentially needs to finish in the top half of the league.

How Does the NWSL Playoff Format Work?

Once the eight qualifying teams have been determined, they're seeded from No. 1 through No. 8 according to their regular-season finishing positions.

Then the fun begins.

The playoffs use a single-elimination format.

Lose and your season is over.

Win and you move on.

There are three stages:

Quarterfinals → Semifinals → NWSL Championship

There are no two-legged series.

There is no best-of-three.

One game determines who advances.

What Are the NWSL Quarterfinal Matchups?

The opening round follows a straightforward bracket:

No. 1 vs. No. 8

No. 2 vs. No. 7

No. 3 vs. No. 6

No. 4 vs. No. 5

So finishing higher doesn't merely look better on the table.

It theoretically gives you a more favorable first-round opponent.

The No. 1 seed plays the lowest qualifier.

The No. 2 seed gets No. 7.

And so on.

Do the Top NWSL Teams Get a First-Round Bye?

No.

All eight playoff teams participate in the quarterfinals.

That's an important difference from the format the league used before 2024.

In 2023, only six teams qualified. The top two seeds received byes directly into the semifinals.

Beginning in 2024, the playoff field expanded to eight teams.

That eliminated the opening-round bye.

Now even the No. 1 seed has to survive a quarterfinal.

No shortcuts.

Who Hosts NWSL Playoff Games?

This is where finishing in the top four becomes particularly valuable.

Under the 2026 competition rules, the higher-seeded team hosts during the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, unless venue availability prevents it.

So seeds 1 through 4 normally get home games in the quarterfinals.

That creates two races near the end of the season.

There's the obvious race:

Can we make the top eight?

Then there's another:

Can we make the top four?

Because qualifying for the playoffs is good.

Qualifying and opening the postseason in your own stadium is even better.

How Do the NWSL Semifinals Work?

The bracket doesn't simply reseed all four surviving teams after the quarterfinals.

Instead, the path is already established.

The winner of:

No. 1 vs. No. 8

plays the winner of:

No. 4 vs. No. 5.

On the other side of the bracket, the winner of:

No. 2 vs. No. 7

plays the winner of:

No. 3 vs. No. 6.

Those two semifinal winners advance to the NWSL Championship.

What Happens If an NWSL Playoff Game Is Tied?

Someone has to advance.

If a playoff game is tied after 90 minutes, the teams play two 15-minute periods of extra time.

That's 30 additional minutes.

And both periods are played in full.

If the match remains tied after extra time?

Penalty shootout.

Eventually, someone is going home.

How Are NWSL Standings Points Awarded?

The league uses the familiar soccer points system.

A team receives:

3 points for a win

1 point for a draw

0 points for a loss

Those points accumulate throughout the regular season and determine the standings.

But there's an obvious problem.

What happens when two teams finish with the same number of points?

What Are the NWSL Tiebreakers?

This becomes particularly important around the playoff line.

Under the 2026 NWSL competition rules, if two or more clubs finish level on points, the first tiebreaker is:

1. Goal Differential

Take the number of goals a team scored.

Subtract the goals it conceded.

The better differential ranks higher.

Still tied?

2. Total Wins

The team with more victories ranks higher.

Still tied?

3. Goals Scored

The team that scored more goals gets the advantage.

If teams still can't be separated, the league moves through additional criteria involving:

head-to-head points,

head-to-head goals scored,

and then disciplinary points.

And if somehow they're still tied after all of that?

For two teams, the final procedure is a coin flip.

For three or more, it's a drawing of lots.

Imagine playing 30 matches only to eventually arrive at:

"Someone get a coin."

Soccer can be cruel.

Why Is Eighth Place So Important?

Because eighth is the line.

Finish eighth?

You're playing postseason soccer.

Finish ninth?

You're watching it.

That can make the final weeks of the regular season fascinating.

A single win can move a club above the playoff line.

A loss can send it below.

And when several teams are separated by only a few points, every goal starts affecting not just that day's result but potentially the tiebreakers as well.

Why Is Fourth Place Important Too?

Eighth might be the most obvious line.

But fourth creates another one.

Remember:

The top four seeds normally host their quarterfinals.

So the difference between finishing fourth and fifth can be significant.

Both teams qualify.

But No. 4 normally plays the quarterfinal at home.

No. 5 normally travels.

That gives clubs already safely inside the top eight plenty to keep playing for.

What's Happening in the 2026 NWSL Playoff Race?

As of late September 2026, the postseason field is still taking shape.

Gotham FC became the first club to officially clinch a playoff berth, while several teams remained separated by narrow margins around both the top-four home-field positions and the eighth-place playoff line.

That's why looking only at whether your team is currently eighth or ninth doesn't tell the whole story.

Check:

points,

games remaining,

goal differential,

and the schedules of the teams immediately around them.

The table can change quickly.

When Do the 2026 NWSL Playoffs Start?

The 2026 postseason begins in November.

Quarterfinals

November 6–8, 2026

Eight teams become four.

Semifinals

November 13–15, 2026

Four become two.

NWSL Championship

November 21, 2026

One becomes champion.

The 2026 NWSL Championship will be played at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

Where Can You Watch the 2026 NWSL Playoffs?

The quarterfinals will be distributed across several broadcast partners.

Two quarterfinal matches are scheduled for ESPN/ABC, while CBS/Paramount+ and Prime Video will each carry another.

The semifinal matches will be divided between CBS/Paramount+ and ESPN/ABC.

The NWSL Championship is scheduled for primetime on CBS, with streaming through Paramount+.

Always check the league's official schedule closer to matchday because exact broadcast details and kickoff information can change.

Has the NWSL Always Had Eight Playoff Teams?

No.

The league's playoff structure has changed as the NWSL itself has grown.

One of the biggest recent changes happened in 2024.

Before then, the six-team playoff structure gave the top two seeds first-round byes.

When the field expanded to eight teams in 2024, every qualifier began playing in the quarterfinals.

The 2026 expansion to 16 total clubs keeps that eight-team playoff field in place.

So while the league grew, the basic postseason threshold remained simple:

Finish in the top eight.

Is the NWSL Shield the Same as Winning the Championship?

No.

This distinction can confuse newer soccer fans.

The NWSL Shield recognizes regular-season performance.

The NWSL Championship is determined through the postseason playoffs.

So a team can finish first in the regular-season standings and still lose during the playoffs.

Likewise, a lower-seeded playoff team can potentially make a postseason run and win the Championship.

They're different achievements.

And that unpredictability is part of what makes knockout soccer entertaining.

A Simple Way to Understand the NWSL Playoffs

Forget everything else for a moment.

Here's the easiest way to remember it:

16 teams compete.

8 make the playoffs.

Seeds 1–8 enter the quarterfinals.

4 advance to the semifinals.

2 reach the Championship.

1 becomes NWSL champion.

That's the entire postseason journey.

The Pyteline Take

If you're new to the NWSL, don't let the standings table intimidate you.

The playoff math itself is refreshingly simple.

Sixteen teams. Eight playoff spots.

Finish in the top half and your season continues.

But once you understand that, the final weeks suddenly become much more interesting.

Eighth versus ninth matters.

Fourth versus fifth matters.

Goal differential matters.

A late equalizer in one stadium can suddenly affect the postseason hopes of a team playing hundreds of miles away.

And once the playoffs begin?

None of the regular-season math can save you.

Eight teams enter.

Every match eliminates one.

Eventually, two teams remain.

Then there's one game left to decide everything.

That's when following the table all season starts to feel worth it.

Vintage-Inspired Fall Decor Ideas That Make Your Home Feel Collected and Cozy

Fall decorating doesn't have to mean buying a plastic pumpkin for every available surface. In fact, some of the most beautiful autumn homes barely look "decorated" at all. They look collected . An old brass candlestick sits beside a stack of worn books. Amber glass catches the afternoon light. A woven basket holds an extra blanket. A trailing plant spills from an aged ceramic pot. There are pumpkins, perhaps, but they're mixed among objects that look as though they've been in the family for decades. That's the appeal of vintage-inspired fall decorating. You're not trying to turn your home into a seasonal aisle at a store. You're trying to make it feel warm, layered, nostalgic and lived in. And in 2026, that approach feels particularly current. Interior trends are moving toward richer colors, warm woods, layered textures, personal objects and vintage elements rather than perfectly matched rooms. The best part? You don't need an antiques budget to ...

How Long Is Fashion Week?

If you've ever heard someone say “Fashion Week” and assumed it meant exactly seven days of runway shows, you're certainly not alone. The name makes it sound simple. One city. One week. Lots of clothes. In reality, Fashion Week is much bigger—and slightly more complicated—than that. Depending on the city and season, an official Fashion Week might last five, six, seven or even nine days . And when people talk about the international fashion month that moves through New York, London, Milan and Paris, the entire cycle can stretch for roughly a month . For the Spring/Summer 2027 womenswear season currently unfolding in September and October 2026, for example, the four major fashion capitals are holding their events one after another: New York: September 10–15 London: September 17–21 Milan: September 22–28 Paris: September 28–October 6 So why do we still call it Fashion Week ? Here's how it all works. So, How Long Is Fashion Week? The simplest answer is: Fashion Week gener...
